Green Map was born in 1992 when Wendy Brawer created the world’s first Green Map, a simple, printed map highlighting New York’s green spaces. The idea was so popular that Wendy officially launched Green Map in 1995 to help communities all over the world create their own Green Maps.  With the involvement of the O2 ecological design network, we developed a universal system that could be used - by anyone, anywhere - to create maps highlighting different types of green resources - ten years before Google Maps existed.

How did Hurricane Sandy empower us at Green Map System?

The Global Giving platform has been a wonderful resource for Green Map since 2008.

We want people to use our mapping tools to change their world. By creating a Green Map, communities can:

Local project leaders and Green Map’s director had an especially good series of meetings in May and June in five European countries - Denmark, Sweden, Romania, Switzerland and Finland. A highlight was the launching of Mapping Our Common Ground, third edition, and the first to be released as an eBook - get your copy of this guide free at bit.ly/MCG18-pdf.

The Open Green Map platform, accessible from new.opengreenmap.org, has as one of its main priorities the privacy of our visitors. This Privacy Policy document contains types of information that is collected and recorded by Open Green Map and how we use it.

Our story starts in November 2016, when our director, her partner Ray Sage, and Irapuato Mexico's Green Mapmaker, Nathalie Castiaux, met with leaders from the Centro Felix Varela, an NGO in Havana Cuba. Following a welcoming lunch with the whole staff, we learned about the wonderful week planned by the Green Map team. This group has led Mapa Verde Cuba for more than 15 years!

In October 2010, our director, Wendy Brawer, and Jakarta Green Mapmaker, Marco Kusumawijaya of Rujak.org were invited to Japan by Aichi Green Map. Along with Keiko Nakagawa and Hagiwara-san of Chubu Recycle, the NGO that has led the remarkable Aichi effort for 7 years, we took part in forums, exhibits, parties and meetings. Their invitation to Nagoya made it possible for Wendy to take part in events in 4 cities!
